About the SHOWA-KAN

Q1. What kind of museum is the SHOWA-KAN?
The SHOWA-KAN is a national facility that collects, preserves, and exhibits historical materials and information on the hardships experienced by the people of Japan during and after World War II (from around 1935 to 1964), including families of the war dead, and provides opportunities for the next generation to learn about their suffering.
Q2. Where is the SHOWA-KAN??
The SHOWA-KAN is the silver building located just off the Kudanshita intersection in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. The nearest station is Kudanshita Station on the subway (Tokyo Metro Tozai Line, Hanzomon Line, Toei Shinjuku Line). When you exit from Exit 4, turn right and you will see the edge of the building.
Q3. Does the museum have a parking lot?
Yes.Our museum has a parking lot. Please note that vehicles with a height of 1.57 meters or more cannot enter. For more information, click here.
Q4. What are the opening hours?
10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The last admission to the museum is 5:00 p.m.
Q5. How much is the admission fee?
An admission fee is charged only for the Permanent Exhibition Rooms on the 6th and 7th floors. For more information, click here.
Q6. When is the museum closed?
We are closed every Monday. However, if Monday is a public holiday or a substitute holiday, the museum will be open, and the closure will be on Tuesday instead. Please note that on specific dates, such as August 15 (the anniversary of Japan's surrender in World War II), the museum may also be open on a Monday. We recommend checking our website for updates before your visit.

Use of the Museum and its Facilities

Q7. Is there a place to eat?
There is no restaurant inside our museum, and we do not have designated spaces for individual visitors to eat.
Q8. Is there a place to leave luggage? Are coin lockers available?
For bulky luggage, please consult with the reception desk on the 1st floor. Coin lockers are located on the 1st and 4th floors.
Q9. Is there space available for rent?
No. We do not have any available rental spaces.
Q10. Is it possible to enter with a stroller? Also, do you offer stroller rentals?
Strollers may be brought into the museum. For strollers for use inside the museum, please consult with the reception desk on the 1st floor.
Q11. Is there a place to change diapers?
A diaper changing table is located in the barrier-free restroom on the 1st floor.
Q12. Are pets allowed inside the museum?
No pets or animals are allowed in the museum. However, guide dogs and other assistance dogs for persons with disabilities are allowed.

Permanent Exhibition Rooms

Q13. How long does it take to go round the Museum?
Depending on the course of your visit, it may take one to one and a half hours to look around all the floors, from the Permanent Exhibition Rooms (6th and 7th floors) to the Audio Visual Room (5th floor), the Library (4th floor), and the News Theater (1st floor).
Q14. Is re-entry allowed to the permanent exhibition room?
Re-entry is allowed on the same day. Please present the ticket stub of your Permanent Exhibition Room Ticket to the 7th floor reception desk.
Q15. Is it possible to take a guided tour?
We do not provide a guide (explanation) service for individual visitors. You can listen to an overview of the exhibition by using the “Pocket Curator” (free), an exhibition guide application. For more information, click here.
Q16. Is it possible to physically touch the exhibits and materials?
Visitors are not allowed to touch any of the materials on display. Since most of the materials in the exhibition booths (corners) are real materials that are more than 80 years old, they are very fragile and brittle, so please do not touch them even if you are close enough to do so.

Q17. Is photography allowed inside the museum?
In principle, photography is prohibited inside the museum (with the exception of the “Air-raid shelter experience” in the Permanent Exhibition Rooms and part of the “Life in the Showa era - Experience area of the Showa 30s (1955 to 1964).”
Q18. What does the SHOWA-KAN logo represent?
The logo is the shape of the SHOWA-KAN building seen from above.
Q19. Why are there no windows in the SHOWA-KAN?
The building designed with as few windows and other openings as possible, so as to eliminate the effects from external sources on the materials.
